COSMIC INTEGRATED DISABLED ALARMS

Disabled Alarms

Ongoing legilsation including the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) has been brought in so that all persons in a building are treated equally, therefore adequate measure for their protection, safeguarding and evacuation are now mandatatory. The most effective solution to provide assistance comes in the form of temporary areas of safety which are known as 'refuge areas'. A disabled person who is in need of assistance is helped to the nearest refuge area to await evacuation.

As part of the DDA, those with disability must have access to the same amenities as anyone else. This includes lavatories. Disabled toilets are equipped with a much larger area of movement, to facilitate wheelchair storage, handlebars to assist with descending and ascending from the toilet and specific Disabled Alarms. These alarms are activated by multiple chords which are mounted from the ceiling at varying heights. If a toilet user is in trouble, they can pull a chord which in turn activates a local alarm sounder - systems can also be equipped with centrally located control and alert units. In the event a chord is pulled, the local alarm sounder (and where installed, the central alert unit) will audibly and visually alert staff that someone needs assistance and the toilet user can receive necessary assistance.

Disabled Refuge

Nominated refuge areas have proved to be the most effective solution in providing disabled people with safe areas within a building from which to receive assistance and be safely and quickly evacuated during an emergency. When an emergency occurs, staff will evacuate wheelchair-restricted customers to a refuge area. Staff will then activate the Refuge Area Communication Unit, which lights a Refuge Occupied indicator on a main Control Panel. The Fire Officer is then able to communicate with the occupants of the refuge areas. Each activated disabled refuge system has an auto listening facility to monitor activity in the Refuge Area. As each disabled person is moved to safety, the system can be reset via a key operated switch on the Refuge Area Communication Unit / Outstation.
